What is PTSD?

A disorder that develops in response to a stressful event or situation of exceptionally threatening or catastrophic nature e.g. assault, road accidents, disaster, rape
Symptoms include:

  • re-experiencing symptoms (e.g. flashbacks, nightmares)
  • avoidance of people or situations associated with the event
  • emotional numbing
  • hyperarousal symptoms NICE ORG

NHS NICE Clinical Guideline 26

Our clinical services are fully NICE compliant and our psychologists provide treatment within clearly identified timeframes.

We provide PTSD treatment for both adults and children and are able to treat single and complex trauma.

We only use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) in the treatment of PTSD. These are evidence based treatments advocated by NICE and selected for their efficacy.

In the case of children we use child focused Trauma focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Critical Incident Response

Sheehan Brooke works closely with companies and organisations assisting them to discharge their duty of care following a critical incident.

We can provide immediate psychological first aid following a critical incident including the assessment of those at risk and deliver follow-up screening for symptoms of PTSD. If a diagnosis of PTSD is confirmed we are able to provide clinical intervention to treat the condition quickly, reducing personal distress and employee absenteeism. (link to Treatment page
